Evermyst Grove

Prologue

Evermyst Grove

The night was cloaked in an oppressive stillness, broken only by the low murmur of voices gathered in secret. Shadows flickered across the faces of those present, their expressions flowing between exhilaration, fear, and grim determination. The leader stood at the center, their voice cutting through the silence like a blade.

“We have to kill him,” the figure declared, their tone resolute yet laced with an undercurrent of unease. “It’s the only way. Grand Luminary or not, we must find a way to end him.”

A collective gasp rippled through the small assembly. Some cheered, others recoiled in shock, while the rest exchanged uncertain glances. The gravity of the words weighed heavily, sinking into the hearts of those gathered.

“I understand your hesitation,” the voice continued, steadying, as if willing the crowd to embrace the dark resolve. “Killing the greatest mage in all the land is no simple feat. His power is unmatched, his wisdom beyond measure. But if we can seize the Lexicon of Luminaries and the Vaelstone, we will hold the keys to reshaping the realm. With them, we will be unstoppable.”

The figure paused, letting their words hang in the air like a storm about to break. The flickering torchlight illuminated their face, revealing eyes alight with a fervent, almost fanatical gleam. “The Keepers and their strongholds are the key to our victory. Taking them will ensure our success.”

Most in the crowd shifted uncomfortably, murmurs of unease rippling through their ranks. But then, the figure’s voice dropped, colder now, heavier with menace.

“And if they will not yield…” They let the words linger, their meaning sinking in like poison. “We will kill them, too.”

Suddenly, many in the crowd erupted into cheers, their cries fueled by ambition and hope for their future. Their voices rang out, sharp and jarring against the silence that gripped the rest. Others glanced around uneasily, torn between their own reluctance and the feverish energy spreading through the more fervent supporters. The cheers swelled, drowning out the soft gasps of those who remained frozen in their uncertainty. The figure let the sound wash over them, a flicker of satisfaction flashing in their eyes.

The silent ones exchanged hesitant looks, their faces pale under the flickering light, but as the weight of the declaration pressed upon them, heads began to bow, and reluctant nods followed. The die was cast, and the path forward was one from which none could turn back.

Far above, the stars watched in solemn stillness, as if bearing witness to a moment that would shake the very foundations of their world.
