Mystical Meanderings
◈ WHO: Holle, Nina, Ryder & Reuben (radishleaves & Skyeforge)
◈ WHEN:  Early afternoon on January 14, 2018
◈
WHERE:  The Mystic Herb
◈ WEATHER:  Sunny, but getting colder.
Holle's nose crinkled. "Mama, I can't believe you ate a fish! That's so, so, so gross!"

Nina stopped walking and blinked at the Frei clinging to her arm. "Sweetie, you scooped a handful of moss off the side of the road once and tried to eat it," she said.

"Yea, that's because I was hungry!" Holle harrumphed. "And you made me throw it away because it "wasn't sanitary." It was perfectly good moss, mama! I had to wait until we got home to eat something. It was the worse."

"I--" Oh, what the use of arguing? Holle would build her justification until the conversation came full circle. If there was one thing the brunette learned about the young Frei, there was no use putting up with disagreements. Either Holle was right, or the opposite party would always be wrong. "Well, let's get home now. It's getting quite cold—I know how awful of a toll cold has on you—and I have a few papers to grade."

Suddenly, there a twinkle to Holle's eye, and Nina inwardly groaned. Oh great, she found something interesting.

"Wait, mama, I found something interesting!" Holle cried. She stretched her finger out to a store across the street and bounced excitedly. "Let's check it out!"

"Uh w-wait, Holle, I have papers to grade—!"

Too late, the Frei had already looked both ways before crossing the street and dragging her guardian along. Well, it was more along the lines of a light tug; Holle wasn't strong at all, and Nina could stop her by simply jerking her arm back. Despite her chagrin, Nina let herself be pulled along. It's not like she could truly say no to Holle's mounting adventurousness.

Once before the store, Holle zipped in, but Nina lingered outside and took in the front. "The Mystic Herb, huh?" she muttered, propping her arm on her hip. "Holle sure knows how to pick 'em..."

Entering, Nina was accosted by the entirety of the Frei pulling her in. "Mama, this place in fantastic!" she chirped, wings fluttering.

Nina gave a sheepish chuckle. "Sweetie, it's only been four seconds," she said. But as she scanned the entirety of the shop and took in the rustic, mystical air, Nina couldn't deny it was a quaint little establishment.
Reuben was hard at work in his office crafting a poultice for a client who would be in to pick it up later that evening. One thing after another went into a small mortar. "There," he began, "now just a couple more ingredients and I'll grind them together to form the paste," he concluded, sprinkling some powder into the mortar. The guardian had been trying his best to make this line of work appealing for Ryder, especially in case Ryder ever wanted to help him with this aspect of the shop.

However, Ryder paid no attention to his guardian. He had no desire to mix poultices, craft custom tea bags, or fill herb bags and pouches for sale. After all, he was only over in the shop today to help out because he wanted some extra money to buy a new book. Oh how he hated the new stipulation Reuben put on him. 'If you want money for anything, you'll have to start earning it,' he had told him. Thus prompted the suggestion that he work a couple shifts a week in the shop. Maybe it had to do with Ryder spending a few hundred dollars on the appstore to buy new books for his phone? Maybe it didn't. Either way, Ryder agreed that it was a fair trade and today was his first shift.

The frei was strewn across the chair on the other side of the room, ribbon draped over one arm and his back resting up against the other as he flipped the pages of the mythical and legendary creatures book Xiu had given him last year. It was always nice to try and find new creatures he could incorporate into his stories. Especially if he could pass the time 'at work' quickly and at least semi-entertained. Especially since his magic had been wonky the past few months, it was nice to relax and not worry so much about it.

Just then, the two could hear the bell ding as the front door opened.

"Ah, a customer. Ryder, can you go take care of this one? I'm almost done with this and then I'll be out," Reuben stated, not once looking up from his station.

Ryder closed the book and set it down on the desk before floating up, stretching out his ribbon and simply stating, "Yes," before heading into the shop's lobby.

Before he could even lay eye to who the customer was, Ryder began the spiel Reuben had instructed him to say to each customer, "Welcome to the Mystic Herb. I'm Ryder, how can I be of service today?"

It wasn't until he saw a fellow frei looking about the room that he even said another word. "Oh, hello, umm," he struggled to speak. "You're a raevan," he said, cheeks beginning to flush slightly. He hadn't ever been of service for a fellow raevan before, and for some reason, he felt a strange embarrassment overcome him. He could deal with a regular customer, after all, he had been doing it all day. But seeing one of his own kind walk through those doors caused a different reaction entirely.
"Oh?"

"Oh!"

Guardian and Frei gasped in union, but it was Holle who reacted first. She tugged on her mother's sleeve childishly, then turned to rocking her, as if the brunette was completely unaware of the other Raevan floating in front of them. It was only after a beat that Nina realized she should say something.

"Ah, we're just looking around--"

"Hello!" Holle suddenly interjected herself in front of her mother, causing the woman to jump slightly. With eyes sparkling, she flexed a finger to her face, and said, "Yes, I'm a Raevan!" She then pointed to Ryder. "And you're a Raevan, too! We have so much in common already!"

"Oh, Holle..." Nina sighed, stepping in front of the Frei before she insisted on dragging Ryder home with them. "Can't you see that he's working? We're here as customers, not guests."

"But, but, but—!"

"Holle."

The Frei puffed out her bottom lip at Nina's tone. It was one she took whenever Holle "misbehaved and/or overstepped her bounds." Holle couldn't understand why she had to be scolded; it's not as if she was asking for his cell phone number, or to go exploring, or to show her collection of things, or any of that other stuff!

Oh, wait.

Holle opened her mouth to ask those very items in rapid unison, but it was Nina who cut her off with, "Could you tell us a little more about The Mystic Herb? Holle here"—the Frei smiled brightly at Ryder at the mention of her name—"was curious as to what this store offers."
Ryder couldn't help but stand there awkwardly as the two went back and forth. As Nina stated that Ryder was, in fact, working, it kicked the thought into his mind that he definitely needed to act as professionally as he could. As the altercation got worse, even Ryder knew what the stern tone of voice meant from a guardian. He didn't speak a word until Nina had completed what she had to say. All the frei could do was float there in what seemed to be an awkward fashion, staring at the two with furrowed brows.

When asked, Ryder shook himself to come back to the moment at hand. "Oh...uhh...yes, this is the Mystic Herb...and...umm..." Ryder began, but he couldn't seem to finish his thought. Something just caught him so off guard about seeing another raevan.

It was at that moment that Reuben interjected as he walked into the lobby from his office, "Hello there, sorry about that. The Mystic Herb is here to serve you with all kinds of metaphysical merchandise. We've got crystals, pendulums, tarot cards and other divination supplies, candles, incense, and other knick-knacks as well. I also have a selection of different types of herbal remedies and potions if you have something you're looking for specifically. Please let us know if there's anything we can do to help."

Reuben placed a hand on Ryder's shoulder, bringing him back to reality yet again. "I-I'm sorry. She just caught me off guard is all."

"It's fine, it's not every day that you have the opportunity to meet another raevan," Reuben stated with a smile.

Ryder took a deep breath and let out a quick and hefty sigh. He did feel a bit better now that Reuben was here to help out. The frei just didn't always feel up to meeting new people, as he wasn't typically the outgoing type. Especially if this was someone that he knew he'd likely see again in the future.
Nina waited patiently for Ryder to explain, but when his guardian—she guessed it was his guardian, considering the familiar gesture with the Frei—came and dutifully did so, she let out a thoughtful hum. Holle's attention was piqued at the sound; it wasn't a dismissive 'hmm', but a curious one! It pleased the Frei exponentially to know she picked a place her mother had liked.

"Is there anything here that interests you, Holle?" Nina asked, prepared to go down the list of things Reuban had mentioned if need be.

"Every--"

"Besides everything. Something specific, sweetie."

"Oh, uhhh..." Holle put a finger to the side of her lip and thought on the matter. What of the list spoke to her? Nina had said she should pick up an interest sometime. Well, besides reading, and even that was done minimally as she preferred pictures to words. "Do you have anything for plants? Something that can make them grow tall, and stay healthy, and live a long while."

Feeling the need to elaborate, Nina said, "Holle's been interested in turning her room into a green room of sorts. Her... Frei powers? I guess that's a way to put it—Frei powers—have her reliant on plants. She has a strong communion with them, and she's off kilter if she's not in the company of some kind of nature. It's most difficult during the winter, unfortunately, so anything to assuage this would be appreciated."

"They sometimes talk to me, too," Holle said proudly. "They don't really speak words, but I can tell if they're happy or sad. Most are sad, since they're stuck in teeny pots, though..."
The two Rothmores watched the scene unfold before them. Reuben waited patiently with a smile on his face as Holle thought and finally spoke, “The best thing for plants is a natural compost. I have some for sale here, but I don’t ever keep much on hand. My long-term suggestion for all clients and customers would be to use the leftovers of other plants and things you eat. Banana peels, leftover greens, carrot and potato peels, that sort of thing. You can mix that in with the soil and use that as a good base for many plants and gardens. That’s what I use out back for my own garden. It’s just an organic, natural fertilizer.”

Ryder didn’t pay any mind to Reuben’s rambling. Instead, his focus was on the powers of this fellow frei. Being a plant based raevan himself, he was curious if he’d ever be able to commune with, say, mushrooms. “How do you know what they feel? Has it always been that way for you or did you have to learn it somehow? Can you teach me?”

“Ryder,” Reuben stated in a stern tone.

Ryder instantly turned around. Right, he was working. That would be unprofessional. “Sorry,” he stated, embarrassed.

Reuben gave a soft smile and a slight nod to signify it was alright, but he did need to remember he was technically on the clock.
"Compost..." Nina made a face at the mention of it. She looked a little bedraggled, and the lines on her face were etched deeply. "I bought my little gremlin here one bag, just to fill a few pots, and..."

"It got everywhere!" Holle said. "Mama and I spent all afternoon cleaning it up."

"I think homemade compost is a good idea, though. I know Holle would have a blast clearing the plates if it is for her plants."

"Oh!" Holle's face brightened at the mention of powers again, if only because she could talk of something she was familiar with. "You don't have to apologize! I'm happy you asked." She tossed about a way to explain in her head, then said, "I just kinda... know! Plants aren't like people; they're always forward with me with their emotions and thoughts. So I can always tell how they are. Though maybe they're like that because they finally have someone to listen to them." She chuckled lightly.

"It's always been this way. At least, I think so? I can't quite remember when I became aware I could feel it, but it might've been from the start. Mama's says I am "naturally empathetic," and I think she's right!" Tilting her head like a bird, Holle added, "Oh, but I don't know if I can teach you? It's something I have very little control over. I'm still trying to understand it myself... And it can be a little bothersome with all of the thoughts, and feelings, and voices..."

Nina smiled sheepishly. She knew her daughter liked to talk at length, but never about herself—especially her powers. If was nice to see her do so, if only to learn a little as an outside listener.

"Sorry if she's keeping you," she said softly. "Seems we're here mostly to talk, not buy something."

Holle puffed out her cheeks. "W-well, he asked, mama," she said childishly.
Reuben couldn’t help but laugh at the small issue the fellow guardian and frei described. A mess is always a fun story to tell after the fact. The tarotist nodded at the conclusion that it might be a good idea. “I think it’s always a bonus because it teaches kids, and ourselves, to try our best not to waste. That everything can have a purpose,” he said with a bright smile.

Ryder nodded in agreement with his guardian, but focused in when the blackberry frei began speaking about her powers. It interested the toadstool. When she spoke about her intrinsically able to do it, the disappointment on his face was apparent. He wished to learn, maybe that was another facet of his abilities as well in which he’d have to find. He was just upset that Holle couldn’t teach him directly. But, maybe if others could do it, he could learn someday. “That’s great, it sounds super interesting. Wait…” Ryder thought a moment. “Does that mean that you can sense when you cook them too?”

Reuben’s eyes widened. “Let’s not get into that,” he stated, bringing the conversation back around to the shopping. “It’s totally fine, I’m glad you guys found this place alright. We always appreciate good conversation with good people.”

Ryder looked down at the floor, face upset. He was curious, he didn’t see a problem knowing certain things, but maybe it wasn’t the right timing to ask such a question?

Reuben paused a moment before he realized that the group hadn’t even officially been introduced. “By the way, I’m Reuben Rothmore, and this is Ryder. Where are you guys from? And how long have you been together?” He pried. He wanted to know who this woman was, and who Holle was, since the original list of names was sent to him, Holle didn’t ring a bell.
"Oh, yes. Very true, but... but the mess..." The teacher's voice trailed off here, her mouth pulling just a little on her right side as she tried to will away her disgust. She could deal with mess, and dirt, and dust, and all manner of grim with a good cleanser and rag, but not when one stain was replaced with another. And another. And another. If there was one thing Nina wished for, it was for her daughter to be a little more cleanly.

Holle's voice hitched in her throat, and she instinctively looked back to Nina for reassurance. She first began to say that she felt nothing at all—at least not yet—and that her powers had only recently blossomed, weak but definitely there, but the sudden shift of her mother's expression caused her to suck in the words. Nina bit her bottom lip, unsure, worry painted on her features finely. The Frei wanted to reach out and comfort her, to tell her that her mother didn't do anything wrong, but the conversation shifted and Holle was pulled back into the topic.

Holle answered Reuban while her mother tried to collect her bearings. "I'm Holle Swan!" she chirped. "And this is my mama, Nina Swan. We've only been together, saaay, two months? Which is a really long time, in my honest opinion." The Frei nodded her head twice to confirm this. "But not long enough to meet all of the Raevans that exist, though. How long have you and, um"—Holle glanced to Ryder, unsure of his name—"your Raevan have been together, Mr. Rothmore?"
Reuben smiled. Yes, he knew the kinds of mess it could end up being. He recalled many times where the soil bag had broken all over the place and it took hours to clean up every last bit before actually getting to the potting. What a mess it could be. But to the tarotist, it was all so worth it.

Ryder floated backwards a bit, huffing slightly to counter the reaction Reuben had to his basic question.

Reuben came forward and began to speak. “It is very nice to meet you both. So, Holle, how have you been liking this world so far? Two months can be a long time to someone who is trying to see everything the world has to offer, right Ryder?” The guardian stated, turning his attention to his charge.

Ryder simply nodded and looked off into the distance, still trying to sort out his feelings. Reuben’s face fell, knowing the frei was upset, but pushed it aside a moment. "Ryder and I have been together for...what, ten months? Close to a year."

Following up his previous statement, he spoke once more. "And if I may ask, how have you been faring, Nina?”
